The Detrimental Severance of Science and Spirit ushers in their strange cousin; The New Age Movement.
An opinion derived from recordings by Helena Blavatsky in Isis Unveiled.
“On the brink of the dark chasm separating the spiritual from the physical world stands modern science, with eyes closed and head averted, pronouncing the pit impassable and bottomless, through he holds in his hand a torch which he need only lower into the depths to show him his mistake. But across this chasm, the patient student of Hermetic philosophy has constructed a bridge.”
The severing of science with its spiritual counterpart has lead to a whole host of misgivings which I think we are only just starting to grasp the enormity of. Civilisations of the past with highly evolved, mystical traditions interwove ‘science’ with spirit, the seen and unseen which were known as two sides of the same coin. There was conscious interaction with the mystery, with the all pervading spirit and the many realms of consciousness that we can know whilst in form. Fast forward to now, mainstream science and religion have all but taken over the mindset of the general population. The former labelling the mysteries unscientific and therefore untrue which has hoodwinked many minds of the Western world.
“The supernatural force that maintains life is not beyond the grasp of human intelligence.” Christian Jaqc.
Somewhere along the way, the fathers of modern day science stuck their head in the sand and dragged the general public with them. Most of the West currently walk this slumber, lacking knowledge and upholding 'science' as the highest truth, hurrying to stick plasters over its gaping holes. For science to really be able to offer us an explanation on life it would need to admit to the general public that there is soul, spirit and matter and this physical realm of consciousness is but one of many.
Madame Blavatsky’s 19th century book Isis Unveiled gives us a glimpse into the roots from which our modern perspective has grown. She brings Mr Tyndall, ‘the mouthpiece of 19th century science’ to the forefront of the developing secular mindset and provides insight into his aims. He is quoted ‘the position of science may be stated in a few words: we claim and we shall take from theology, the entire domain of cosmological theory’. This demonstrates his materialistic, highly restrictive worldly position. Essentially science was removing all spiritual truths from theories surrounding the cosmos and shaping them instead to be as secular as the mindsets of the men leading the charge. For we all know that science operates on an acknowledgement of truth where it dictates the parameters. If it cannot be measured by their methods then essentially it isn’t real. I imagine this is where terms such as woo-woo have grown from for anything that steps out of the tangible reality 'science' has defined.
It isn’t a huge jump to see that the general state of mind, fumbling in the darkness, floating on surface level “facts” of existence, has grown from the influence men such as this had on public perspective. In the minds of many we are Godless, soulless and clueless of anything going on outside of our physical reality and anyone that claims otherwise is delusional. Yet according to Madame Blavatsky, it wasn’t only these scientific thinkers that funnelled perspective in this way. In some ways a tag team job was done on public mentality. Science and religion seem to have (whether intentionally our not) teamed up, resulting in an ‘overly bewildered public’ losing all faith in the ways of deity and spark of the immortal spirit. The lights of Christianity and Science became blinding.
This is shown in Isis Unveiled where Madame Blavatsky quotes a secular paper speaking on the stance of the protestant clergy, “They seem to be willing to undermine the public faith in all the spiritual phenomena of the past, if they can only see the pestilent modern heresy stabbed to the heart.” The arrogance of men of the clergy, who were not truly spiritual, would sacrifice the miracle and spirit of biblical teachings so long as public exploration of God remained within limiting religious dogma.
Looking back it is easy to see the mess we are in today. However, it gives me tremendous hope as these teachings resurface once more. It is through texts such as these that the recognition of Hermetic philosophy prevails, and mysteries can be entered and explored. Helena Blavatsky pokes light hearted fun at new age spirituality in its ‘strange cousin’ ways. Yet this is the vessel that the truth ancient mystics knew is riding into our modern consciousness on and so I will gladly take it.
